Causes and solutions for common injection molding defects
Short shots
Incomplete filling of the mold cavity is called a short shot, which results in an incomplete and only partially molded plastic part.
In this video you will learn about possible causes of short shots, one of the most common injection molding defects, and how you can solve the problem of unevenly filled parts to prevent rejects in your injection molding process.
It is not unusual that even well established and proven injection molding processes generate short shots or other defects. If you're producing plastic injection molded parts, quality issues can soon get extremely expensive due to unsellable products and unsatisfied customers. Therefore, some basic troubleshooting knowledge is essential for a successful molding procedure. That includes not only knowing about control adjustments and preventative measures to avoid quality defects, but also being aware how they arise in first place.
This video is only an excerpt of the several causes and solutions for short shots and can be used as a guideline but does not compensate for a personal discussion with the ENGEL Processing Group.
There is also a software available from ENGEL that help prevent short shots and other processing defects - called iQ weight control. Ask our experts for more information on this product.
